30% More Suicides
In the last years the number of suicides has increased dramatically. Between 2008 and last year there was an increase of 30% of cases of suicide. The increase were mainly natives and Western immigrants, like Belgians and Germans.
The numbers about suicide were published on Wednesday by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS).
Last year, 1753 people committed suicide while in 2008 that number was 1353 people. Most of the suicide victims are male. The CBS didn’t investigate the reason why the people committed suicide. According to a spokesman of the CBS it is obvious that the economic crisis might be the cause of the increase. “In the beginning of the 1980s, when the Netherlands faced an economic crisis, there was also an increase of the number of suicides.”
The number of Western immigrants who commit suicide is over the last ten years 8% higher than among natives. This increase is due to male Belgians and male and female Germans. The CBS does not have an explanation for this. However, in Belgium and Germany the number of suicides is in general higher than in the Netherlands.
The numbers also show that people with their roots in Morocco or Turkey almost never commit suicide.
