Muslim woman files report of discrimination
Leila Kallal from Zeeland filed a report of discrimination on Saturday with police in Roosendaal after being refused an internship. She claims to have been denied an internship because she wanted to wear a Hijab. The 18-year old muslim woman told the ANP that she explained her situation to the police. The report, along with other documents, will go to the public prosecutor. An employment agency in Roosendaal did not want to work with the girl because she may want to wear a head scarf, or hijab, while working. The agency said that it was a misunderstanding. Leila says she has a "good feeling" now that the report has been filed and everything is fixed. She does not know when she will hear something back, but hopes that her case will not be dismissed. Minister Lodewijk Asscher from Social Affairs and Employment said on Friday that he would support Leila to bring the issue to the public. "If the facts are correct, then this is a serious issue."
According to Asscher, it is important to file reports in these types of cases. "Discrimination is not only harmful, it is also illegal. By filing a report, you draw a clear line", the minister says.
