Arjen Robben wins Sports Personality of the Year
On Monday Arjen Robben was named Sports Personality of the Year by a section of the Dutch sports press. The Bayern Munich striker is the first winner of this prize. In the final phase of the election Robben received more votes than athlete Dafne Schippers and cyclist Niki Terpstra.
The entire election consisted of 56 title holders that produced the most successful Dutch sports year in history. In addition to his achievements, Robben was also chosen for "his role in the media, his international impact and his central presence in the memorable year for sport".
In 2014 Robben was also elected Athlete of the Year and received a place in the world team of the year on the FIFA gala in Zurich. He also finished fourth in the Gouden Bal (Golden Ball) election behind Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Manuel Neuer.
