Extra Red Cross volunteers called in for busy Vierdaagse first aid posts

The first aid posts along the route for the second day of the Nijmegen Vierdaagse are so busy on Wednesday that the Red Cross had to call in extra volunteers, a spokesperson for the Red Cross said to NU.nl. The day started out with 75 first aid volunteers working at the four first aid stops along today's route. Another 25 were called in due to how busy the stops were. According to the spokesperson, patients coming in mainly fainted due to the heat, though there are also many blisters. Fainters get priority. People with blisters are advised to walk on to the next stop if possible, or they have to wait. "Participants must keep eating and drinking well." According to the Vierdaagse organizers, 1,206 participants dropped out on day one. A higher percentage than in the previous three years.
