KNMI issues code yellow weather alert for strong winds in northern Netherlands
The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) has issued a Code Yellow warning for strong winds expected to affect the northwestern and northern provinces of the Netherlands from late Sunday night into Monday morning. The warning is in place for North Holland, Friesland, Groningen, the Wadden Islands, and the IJsselmeer region, and will remain active until 8 a.m. Monday.
Strong gusts of wind, reaching speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour over land and as high as 100 kilometers per hour along the coast, are predicted. According to KNMI, the gusts will blow from the northwest and could pose risks to commuters and outdoor activities. The hazardous conditions are likely to disrupt the morning rush hour, with KNMI urging travelers to exercise caution on roads and bridges.
The Code Yellow alert indicates a moderate risk of dangerous weather that may require increased vigilance. Drivers of high-profile vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians in open areas are especially vulnerable to sudden gusts. Those traveling through the affected regions are advised to plan accordingly and stay updated through KNMI’s official channels.
As part of its preparations, KNMI has warned of potential delays on public transportation, particularly in coastal areas, where gusts could interfere with ferry operations or rail systems. Local authorities have also been advised to monitor conditions closely and respond to any incidents caused by falling debris or unsafe travel conditions.
"The winds are expected to diminish as the morning progresses," said a KNMI representative. "We anticipate calmer conditions returning later in the day as the weather front moves eastward."
Residents and visitors are encouraged to secure loose objects outdoors, such as garden furniture, trampolines, and other lightweight items that could become hazardous projectiles in high winds. Additionally, maritime activities in the Wadden Sea and IJsselmeer may face interruptions, with strong gusts and choppy water conditions anticipated.
